Current member of:  I’ve been a member of Weaver’s Way Co-op for going on 10 years. Over the years I’ve worked paid positions in the deli and prepared foods.

What roles have you served in co-ops, nonprofits, or other membership organizations (Board, staff, etc.)?  I’m currently a volunteer member on Weaver’s Way Food Justice Committee. It’s a group of passionate co-op members who tackle food advocacy in our region. We support legislature that ensures persons in underserved communities have equal access to affordable and healthy foods.

Why are cooperatives important to you and to the Philadelphia area? As a minority, I’ve personally witnessed what having little to no access to healthy foods does to the overall health and well being of family members. The co-op gives me greater access and opportunity to feed my own family a wide variety of local and nutritious foods. Foods that combat certain illnesses as well as obesity and other issues that disproportionately affect minority households. Coops are essential foodie hubs within our communities that educate and engage people in the ongoing and necessary conversations about healthy eating; young and older alike.

Has experience in the following: Group process and decision-making, Meeting facilitation, Volunteer programs

How will your experience, skills or unique perspectives strengthen the PACA Board?  I believe my perspective as a minority will help broaden the views and positively impact the mission of inclusiveness and diversity promotion. I count my ability to engage people from different cultural backgrounds and religious faiths with compassion and sensitivity as an asset.

Where do you see PACA in 5 years? It would be fantastic to see the work that’s done through PACA grow to be used as a local and possible national model of true diversity and inclusion.

As you think about the three primary board roles—ambassador, advocate, and asker—in which role(s) do you think you will want to be most active? I see myself being most active in an advocate capacity, helping to further impact positive change.
