PACA's CLI Workshops in partnership with Cultureworks - Summer/Fall 2017

PACA is making this workshop series available on a sliding scale basis.  We recognize that this kind of learning experience is often cost prohibitive for individuals, particularly  leaders of color, low-income/low-asset individuals, and those from grassroots and small organizations.

PACA is offering this workshop as a part of its Cooperative Leadership Institute (CLI) in partnership with CultureWorks Greater Philadelphia.  However, PACA is not fully funded to offer these workshops so if you can afford to pay at the high end of the scale, please do!

For more information or to ask questions, please send an email to If you want to attend but can't pay, please contact us.  We have funding for a few reserved slots.

What's this workshop about?

Change happens fast.  What do you do within your organization to prepare for its inevitable arrival? We all need to be adaptive and flexible to continuously meet organizational needs. Yet, many of us are trained in our work and organizing spaces to be focused on the here and now, which further silos and disconnects us from the “bigger picture”.  What can we do to better participate in our organizations - especially to take advantage of opportunities and face challenges together?

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Explore how to ask “big questions” to get perspectives, insights, and opportunities from conversations that can lead to better decision-making
  • Learn more about your organization by mapping out key relationships and aspects of organizational values and culture
  • Gain knowledge about how systems and design approaches form cornerstones of strategic thinking

What’s this workshop about?

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.”  - Alice Walker

In order to use power to effect positive change in our organizations, we have to develop a good relationship with it.  Yes, power can be abused, corrupting, and hoarded.  Power can also be helpful, edifying, and shared.  What’s your relationship to power in your organization?  What do you know about your own power?  How can you shift your understanding of power to better equip you to lead?

This workshop is designed to motivate leaders to stand responsibly in their own power.  To do so, participants will:

  • Explore how different types of power function resulting in deeper organizational awareness
  • Identify how formal and informal power show up in their own experiences and how to leverage those to lead better and help others step up into power
  • Recognize barriers to acquiring power so as to identify opportunities for organizational shifts away from bias and discrimination

  • Identify and map out how to use self-care techniques to manage yourself better and still effectively lead
  • Understand the brain and body connection to you emotions and why you need a break

As fundamentally democratic organizations, co-op leadership can look and feel different from leadership in for-profit and even non-profit businesses.  With an emphasis on leadership rooted in servant and distributive leadership theories, PACA’s delivery of co-op leadership skills can serve employees, boards, and community organizers in a variety of sectors.

Over the years PACA has become expert at delivering highly participative and interactive workshops across leadership topics.  Group workshops are offered in cross-sectoral settings as well as for individual organizations.  If you are interested in having PACA offer leadership workshops at your business, please send an email to
