This year, we’re celebrating bike season with worker-owned co-op, Keystone Bicycle Co.! Keystone is a full-service bicycle shop that has been operating for five years from its location on the corner of Berks and American Streets in South Kensington. It is run by five worker-owners, Nick, Woody, Ryan, Zack, and Ag, who collectively seek to provide high-quality services to their community through an ethical, inclusive, ever-evolving business. They are passionate about getting folks on their dream bikes, and the immense dedication and care each of them pours into their work can be felt in the experience of every single customer. Anytime customers visit the shop, they get the opportunity to meet and connect with one or more worker-owners, whom they can trust to be highly passionate and knowledgeable about their work. 

Keystone Bicycle Co. specializes in bikepacking, long-distance riding, and getting riders geared up to take on any adventure. They also offer a variety of bike services, including tune-ups, flat fix repairs, and custom bicycle and wheel builds. Additionally, the shop is stocked with all your bicycle-related needs, including bicycles, parts, tools, and a wide range of accessories. They also have camping items and some super cool Keystone Bikes merch! 

Earlier this year, Keystone launched a touring bicycle frame that they designed in partnership with their friends at Bassi Bikes of Montreal. The bicycle is called the Belmont, and is an all-road, randonneuring, light-touring frame that combines Bassis’s design and manufacturing knowledge with the Keystone crew’s extensive experience in long-distance randonneuring. It is currently available in-store and online. The shop also hosts community events throughout the year, including an annual bike swap and various bike camping trips. Their next big event is Bikeout, put on in partnership with the Penn Environmental Council. Taking place on September 13-14 at Camp Kweebec, Bikeout will be a supported bike camping weekend that promises a grown-up summer camp experience complete with games, swimming, s’mores, and of course, lots of biking. For the worker-owners of Keystone, being in a cooperative has been incredibly valuable. It’s given them the freedom to make creative business decisions and the ability to build a strong community around the shop, both of which have helped them grow, evolve, and take on many new and exciting projects.
