The NESTT & PACA
Introducing The NESTT!
The NESTT is a project in predevelopment. It will be a nature, science, and art–focused center for early childhood learning and family support. Located just south of Bartram’s Garden, The NESTT will be an early care and educational facility as well as a community center, which will utilize the Garden as their wider classroom. While prioritizing Southwest Philadelphia’s littlest learners, The NESTT will also give educational opportunities and support to families and caregivers.
This project is a partnership between the Woodland Academy, Greater Philadelphia Health Action (GPHA), Bartram’s Garden, and PIDC. They come together in declaration that quality early childhood education and family support are crucial determinants of long-term health and well-being for both children and families alike. Their care will prioritize the importance of learning in green spaces, nutritional food, and comprehensive collective care for families.
The NESTT participated in PACA’s 2021-2022 Study Circles cohort. We are very thrilled to say that they are furthering their work with PACA in the sophomore year program: the Build Track. Together we will explore potential opportunities for The NESTT to develop into a cooperative center. They are exploring the possibility of becoming a member and/or a worker cooperative. Nothing is set in stone, but the Steering Committee is clear that they want an ethical workplace for their staff members which prioritizes livable wages and benefits, as well as having a voice in the center’s decision-making. The Steering Committee is also clear that they want community members to be active participants in the center, to be empowered by the work, and for the center to support community-wealth building. The exact structure which will emerge from these values.
The NESTT and PACA are excited to work together in an in-depth way for the next six months. Stay on the lookout for all that lies ahead in The NESTT’s future.
